For the fifth consecutive year, Correos was one of the main partners and again officially involved in certain aspects of the logistics of La Vuelta 2024, one of the foremost cycle races in the international calendar. The company was in charge of transporting more than 400 tonnes of material between the various venues of the race, which in its 79th year covered 3625 kilometres in 21 stages, crossing Portugal and the centre and western parts of Spain.
This year Correos also set up a temporary “inflatable” tent in the Parque Vuelta at each stage, in an area devoted to fans where partner companies and institutions were able to offer promotional gifts and activities related to the world of cycling. In particular, in the Correos tent a game had been set up consisting of two roulette wheels with a series of questions relating to its products.
But also, new for 2024, the Correos philatelic service released two ATM designs coinciding with the start of the first stage in Lisbon and the finish of the last stage in Madrid. These two issues could be obtained with a special graphic in the Correos tent in both cities, where collectors and visitors were also able to purchase special covers and postcards.
The great designs are by José Carlos Alonso, from Correos’s Filatelia’s design and image department. Both issues are complementary, consisting of the image of a cyclist, a monument of the relevant city, and the logo of La Vuelta 24.
In the Lisbon issue, the cyclist and background are in green, the colour of the Portuguese flag, and to the right, is the well-known Arco da Rua Augusta that looks across the Praça do Comércio.
In the Madrid issue, the cyclist and background are in red, the colour representing Spain, which is also the colour of the logo and the jersey of the winner of La Vuelta. On the right there is an image of the Palacio de Comunicaciones, in the Plaza de Cibeles.
