The Spanish Correos philatelic service has announced the designs for two new issues of variable value stamps (ATMs), specially created for the 64th National Philatelic Exhibition – EXFILNA 2026 – to be held in Mérida from September 23rd to 27th.
The archaeological site of Mérida was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. The ‘Archaeology’ stamp design features a detail of the Medusa mosaic, discovered in July 2023 during excavations at a Roman domus at the Huerta de Otero archaeological site.
In a city boasting excellent examples of contemporary architecture, such as Rafael Moneo’s National Museum of Roman Art (incidentally, my favourite architectural work in Spain, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2026), the ‘Architecture’ stamp design is dedicated to the spectacular Lusitania Bridge by the engineer and architect Santiago Calatrava opened in December 1991.
