SPAIN. Madrid’s Plaza Mayor, ten years of ATMs (2016-2026)

Correos philatelic service set up a new postal kiosk manufactured by the British company Intelligent AR (see article published in VARIABLE 41) at the 2016 Feria Nacional del Sello, in Madrid. This marked the beginning of a new and interesting phase in the issue and collecting of variable value stamps in Spain.

With nearly 100 ATM designs issued over ten years, the philatelic service will mark this anniversary by releasing a new special series combining two designs, one dedicated to Madrid’s Plaza Mayor and the other to the tenth anniversary, featuring images from the very first two issues.

And it will be a special series for several reasons:

  • Like the “Mortadelo y Filemón” series of 2025 (see article), the Anniversary design will only appear on every fifth label.
  • For the first time, the information on all the stamps will be printed in a special colour called ‘oro viejo’ (old gold).
  • This series with the special graphic coinciding with the dates of the 2016 National Stamp Fair will only be available on Sunday April 26th, from the temporary stand that Correos sets up at the weekly stamp market in Madrid’s Plaza Mayor.
